Meat market.

I never really thought about where my meat came from before I moved to Texas. I’m from Illinois. I was pretty square on where my corn and soybeans came from. But meat? Meat was more of a mystery.

But then we moved to Texas and suddenly it was everywhere. Not just the barbeque and steakhouses, but the actual cows.

Now, I see this scene at least once a day.

Then I started to travel all around Texas for my old job and I got even more up close with cows on farms and ranches that I was surveying.

Living so close to my potential food sources really put me intune with how my food is “grown” and produced. Because we are so close to farms and ranches, our grocery store HEB has a pretty good meat department.

But lately, I have been making the trek up to Hutto, Texas to the Westphalia Meat Market. The original market is in Lott, Texas and the operation has been in the owner’s family since the 1960s. It is nice knowing where my meat came from!

Lately, I have been getting the box specials.

Basically its a whole ‘lotta meat for a not so big price! This box will last us at least a month and a half. There is even chicken in there!

They have the best steaks.

Now what is our favorite thing that we have to eat right away? The sausage! They make their own sausage and it is amazing!

I’m pretty sure that this is how we are going to do our meat from here on out!

  1. My husband and I buy a 1/4 of a cow from a local farm and have it butchered. The meat is a lot better quality and the cost is SO much cheaper in the long run. I am so surprised that more people don't buy from farms or meat markets.
